Musical Therapy Episode 146 - The Joy of 78rpm Records, Part 2 Posted: November 8, 2018 - 59 minutes - 55.9 Mb - playsheet -
I play some 78rpm records from my collection, watch them go spinning round (part of the joy), and speak to a Trent University Student (Alex Campagnolo) who is doing research on the sustainability of recorded music. Lots of great music--all on shellac(except for two). Even one from India from 1963. From country to rock'n'roll, to jazz and some 'easy listening'. Some great records!
The Old Time Country Show Episode 228 Posted: November 5, 2018 - 59 minutes - 55.7 Mb - -
Wabi Women Episode 38 - The Promise Posted: November 4, 2018 - 58 minutes - 35.3 Mb - -
Making promises to those we love is something midlife women do constantly. We mostly make promises to please others. Yet many of us have stopped making promises to ourselves, perhaps knowing we will probably break those promises, choosing others’ desires over our own. In this episode, listeners make a new promise to themselves and keep it. Their pledge could be as basic as promising to listen to our radio shows, and doing all the activities for no one but themselves. Keeping our promises starts a fundamental shift in our self-confidence.
Left Off the Dial Episode 260 - S06E39 31 October 2018 Posted: November 3, 2018 - 59 minutes - 55.7 Mb - playsheet -
It's Hallowe'en... and who cares? Not us. We didn't even wear costumes tonight, and we didn't give out candy either... unless you consider our music sweet as honey.
Musical Therapy Episode 145 - The Joy of 78rpm Records, Part 1 Posted: November 1, 2018 - 59 minutes - 56.4 Mb - playsheet -
For those of you too young to remember, 78rpm records were usually 10", made of shellac, and played at a much faster speed than lp's or 45's. They were fairly heavy and very breakable.
In this program I talk about their history---which is really the history of the recording industry in the U.S. and Canada (and even touch on Britain and India).
I play 78's from 1910 up to 1972. You'll also hear the first commercial use of a recording machine, from 1888. And a piano roll.
Lots of great music. And a few records that aren't so great but have historical significance.
The Old Time Country Show Episode 227 Posted: October 29, 2018 - 59 minutes - 55.7 Mb - -
Wabi Women Episode 37 - The Pillar of Power Posted: October 28, 2018 - 58 minutes - 35.9 Mb - -
Our question is: Who have you become?
Western culture mostly looks outward, yet peace in midlife cannot come from this orientation. It can only be built on deep contentment and an acceptance that we will not find peace in our titles, possessions, or the roles we play at work and at home. When we begin in earnest to change our self-perspective, the world’s view of us as women also transforms. We stop being invisible and color back in our lives, to be seen again. Leigh and Crystal share their view that the growing number of midlife western women recreating themselves will also create changes in pro-social action, as the Dalai Lama suggests, peacefully saving the world.
